Two types of screens are used for modern mobile phones and other devices, such as television and notebooks. They’re respectively LCD and OLED.
Recently people tend to think about what type of display they have when purchasing a mobile phone. Many consumers prefer to buy LCD phones, while others prefer purchasing OLED-displayed mobile phones.
But what are the pros and cons of these two types of screens? Note that both styles of displays have their benefits and disadvantages.
In this guide, I will clarify the technology behind each type of display, and in particular, their advantages and disadvantages.
As you know, IPS stands for In-Plane Switching and Liquid Crystal display LCD. Even some other types of LCDs are available, the IPS LCD ara used for mobile phones.
LCD is the most common type of display you’ll see on the market. Millions of Pixels can be seen LCD. As you know, pixels evaluate display quality. For example, here’s how a popular mobile phone review website Gsmarena shows a mobile phone’s display quality.
Advantages of IPS LCD
- Cheaper than OLED
- The manufacturing process is not a complicated task
- Last long than OLED
- The color accuracy is very high
- Disadvantages of IPS LCD
- Sometimes backlight leakages can happen
- Limited contrast compared to OLED
OLED refers to Organic Light Emitting Diode. OLED’s way of working is entirely different from LCD screens. The Red, Green and Blue pixels emit their own light unlike LCD screens. Colors are rendered by adjusting the brightness of those pixels.
OLED screens can deliver the highest image quality in comparison with other types of displays.
When you prefer to watch movies on your computer or phone, then in OLED displays, you can expect a very high-quality color.
However, the price of the OLED display is higher than the LCD screen. Most of the time, you can see OLED screens on mobile phones.
Advantages of OLED Screens
- Extremely dark blacks can be seen
- When you see a dark background, you will not see some gray like in LCD
- Thinner than LCD
- Less power consumption
Disadvantages of OLED
- Manufacturing cost is higher than LCD
- Image burn-in can happen
LCD vs. OLED: Which One is Best for You
That hinges on your needs. I’d like to use OLED screens personally because they can produce very natural colors compared to LCD screens. However, note that since OLED’s manufacturing cost is much higher than LCD, the product you want to purchase with an OLED display in it can be higher in price than the product with the same features but an LCD screen.
